Metas are evolved experimented humans that used to be called "heroes" at an earlier time. Truthfully metas were seen as slaved super soldiers to defends zones from annomallies. Now dwindled to an unknown number, the humans call the metas worthless and look down on them as lessers for failing to defend humanity from the strange threats of the world. Yui and Violet choose to defend humanity out of the goodness of their hearts but it's unclear if that mindset will remain.
